Safety Audit is a systematic method of hazard identification using a predetermined checklist method.  It has been conducted in the oil/gas industry in one form or other. Generally, Safety Audits are of two types viz. Internal Safety Audits and External Safety Audits .
The objective of safety audit is
1. To evaluate the status of existing Safety Systems / Measures against various Industrial Hazards & Risks in Process Operation.
2. To review Organization’s health and safety management system
3. To identify, any potential health and safety risks associated with Process Operation, Storage, Handling & transportation of Hazardous Chemicals.
4. To identify and suggest practicable remedial measures in order to prevent and control workplace risks.
5. Assessment of existing firefighting facilities.
6. To review Effectiveness& adequacy of legal Compliances 
7. To carry out critical examination of all operations of plants in the premises and to identify potential hazards and risks, if any.
8. To identify and suggest practicable remedial measures in order to prevent and control workplace risks.
9. To carry out study of particulars such as Operating Procedures, Plant Control Instrumentation, ON-SITE Emergency Plan, Personnel Protection Standards, Accident Records, Safety Training System and Loss Minimising methods.
10. To carry out study of plant start up and shut down procedures including check-list for safe plant start up, operation, maintenance and shut down of the plant to carry out study of modifications carried out in the plant.
11. To carry out study of surrounding industries for various industrial Hazards & Risks and suggest practicable remedial measures.
